  1. Why It's Important To Support Authors

Last month author Kelly Meding announced she would no longer be writing her Dreg City books. The sales weren’t there, meaning the publishing house didn’t extend a contract for the series. Fans were upset, and understandably, so was Kelly. I visited the BLOG in which she made the sad announcement about the future of the series. Many commenters asked that she self-publish or consider other venues for her work. No one wanted to say good-bye.

Including those who pirate her work.

Apparently there is a thread on a piracy site bemoaning the end of the series. People are bitching up a storm, wondering why the series is ending. Here’s a hint: Readers have to buy books in order for authors to write them. It’s not rocket science. It’s simple math. If an author isn’t selling, a publisher is less likely to contract books in a series.

This was so completely depressing to me when I found out. Kelly and I both belong to the League of Reluctant Adults, so we know each other through there. It hits very close to home for me, because I’m wrapping up this third book in my series and I’m pretty sure my publisher won’t be optioning a fourth, for much the same reason.

I keep seeing the pirating argument back and forth here on Tumblr and elsewhere, and whatever your point of view on the matter is, what you’re looking at in the article above is a direct representation of how it hurts us as artists.

    In the end, everyone loses.
